A Week of Learning and Creativity in Year 5

This week, we have been busy learning across the curriculum and have made great progress in lots of exciting areas!

In Maths, we continued our unit on shape, where we explored different types of angles, compared their sizes, and identified and classified a range of polygons. The children showed excellent reasoning skills and have become much more confident using mathematical vocabulary when describing shapes.

In English, we used our author skills to write vivid setting descriptions linked to our new class book, The Explorer. We have absolutely loved reading the story so far, and the children were inspired by the rainforest setting, using ambitious vocabulary and descriptive language to bring their writing to life.

During PE, we have been developing our tennis skills, focusing on controlling the ball and successfully hitting it back to an opponent. The children have shown great determination and teamwork as they practised rallies and improved their accuracy.

In Art, we finished our unit on the architect Zaha Hadid by evaluating our own building sculptures. The children reflected on their final pieces and discussed what they had learned about sculpture, particularly different ways to join and strengthen card. It was fantastic to see how their skills and understanding developed throughout the unit.

In Science, we explored the life cycles of mammals and learned that, while most mammals give birth to live young, some mammals lay eggs. The children were fascinated by this and asked some thoughtful questions about how animals grow and survive.

In forest schools this week, we carried out our fire safety training in preparation for taosting marshmallows. We also had time to perfect our den building skills - they look amazing!

Well done to everyone for a brilliant week of learning! 🌟
