We’ve had a wonderful first week back in Year 1 after the February half term! The children have settled back into school brilliantly and have already shown great enthusiasm for our new learning across all subjects.
This week, we began exploring our new text 'The Rabbit Problem' by Emily Gravett. The children have loved discovering the different “problems” that appear each month in the story.
So far, they have discussed and written about the problems faced in January, February, March, and April, using the illustrations to help explain what is happening. It has been lovely to see the children making predictions and using their inference skills.

In Maths, we have started our topic on place value to 50. The children have been learning to recognise the tens and ones in numbers from 20–50. They’ve used resources, pictures, and practical activities to help build a strong understanding of how numbers are made.
Our artist focus for this term in Art is Beatrix Potter. This week, the children learned key facts about her life and discovered what type of artist she was. They were fascinated to find out she was both an author and an illustrator, well known for her beautiful animal drawings and stories. We’re excited to explore her artwork further over the coming weeks.
We have begun our new Geography topic on the United Kingdom. The children learned the names of the four countries that make up the UK: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They enjoyed locating them on a map and discussing places they may have visited.
This term in Personal Development, we are learning about Economic Wellbeing. To start off, the children thought about what careers they might like to have when they are older. We had some wonderful ideas—from doctors and teachers to astronauts and builders!
A little reminder that Thursday 5th March is World Book Day. We are very excited to celebrate and can’t wait to see all the fantastic costumes the children come to school in!
Homework this week is Sounds Write activities based on the /u/ sound.
