Welcome back- I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break. It has been lovely to see the children return to school with big smiles, ready for a new term of learning!
In English, we have begun exploring our new text Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett. The children made fantastic predictions about what they thought the story might be about. We have also started to look closely at the first few pages, retrieving information about meerkat families and discussing what we have learned about their lives.
In Maths, the children have been working on numbers up to 20, exploring different ways to represent them. We have been using tens frames, beads and rekenreks, helping the children strengthen their understanding of number, place value and the different ways a number can be shown.
Our new DT topic this half term is Food Technology, and the children are very excited! They will be designing and creating their own fruit salad. To begin, we completed our first Focus Practical Task: taste testing a range of fruits including bananas, apples, oranges and pears. The children practised describing the texture and flavour of each fruit—there were lots of favourites!
In Geography, we are continuing our topic on Hot and Cold Places. The children have been looking at the names of the 7 continents and locating them on a world map.
In Computing, the children have started our new topic 'Programming' using the Bee-Bots. The children are learning the basics of programming by giving the robots clear instructions (algorithms) to move forward, backward, and turn.
This week, we are sending home a Learning Postcard. We ask that you sit down and complete this together with your child. It is a lovely way for them to share what they have enjoyed learning this week and for you to record a comment about their progress. Please ensure these are returned by Wednesday, so they can be stuck into their Science books.
Any questions, please ask!
Miss Prescott
