What an incredible week we’ve had in Year 1P!

To celebrate National Storytelling Week, the children took part in a special online workshop with Annemarie Anang. During the session, Annemarie explored how stories can be built using sound and music, and the children absolutely loved joining in. They listened carefully, experimented with different sounds, and discovered how music can bring a story to life. It was a fantastic experience that really inspired their own storytelling.

In English, we have been diving deeper into the story Meerkat Mail. The children listened to the whole story and then created a feelings graph to show how Sunny’s emotions change throughout his adventure. They thought carefully about each part of the story and explained how Sunny might be feeling and why.

The children then created wonderful story maps to help them retell the story in their own words. On Thursday and Friday, they used these to write their very own retell of Meerkat Mail—and I have been blown away reading their work!

In Geography, the children discovered why some countries are hot and others are cold. They learned that a country’s temperature depends on how close it is to the equator. The children asked fantastic questions and enjoyed exploring the world map to spot countries near and far from the equator.
This week, we also concluded our Science investigation. The children observed how the water placed in the freezer had turned to ice and used their knowledge to explain why. They confidently stated that water freezes because the temperature inside a freezer is below 0°C.

In Computing, the children worked in pairs to programme floor robots. They practised giving clear instructions—forward, backward, left, and right—to help their robots move across the floor mats.

We will now be moving on to Numbots for our Maths homework. All children have their login details stuck into the front page of their reading records, and they have also taken home another copy of the letter explaining how to log in.

We kindly ask that the children spend 20 minutes practising on Numbots to help build their number skills and confidence.

A polite reminder about when to return reading books: Sharing books are to be returned on a Monday. Reading books and Reading Records are to be returned every Friday, this allows adeuqate time to change over all books.

Any questions, please ask!
