4/9/26 - Y1B

Date: 4th Sep 2026 @ 5:00pm

What a fantastic first week we have had in Year 1! We are incredibly proud of all the children and how well they have settled into their new class.

This week, we have been consolidating our Sounds-Write knowledge from Reception, helping the children to build confidence and strengthen the skills they already know. It has been lovely to see them applying their phonics knowledge so well in all areas of their learning.

In English, we received an exciting letter from Professor Klunk! He told us all about his Great Big Story Dream Machine and explained that he is looking forward to seeing our drawings and writing over the coming weeks. We spent time thinking carefully about what Professor Klunk and his amazing machine might look like before creating our own pictures. The children then wrote some fantastic sentences to accompany their pictures. We were very impressed with their creativity!

In Maths, we began our first topic on place value. The children have been busy sorting and counting objects. They worked brilliantly and enjoyed exploring different ways to organise and count items.

Our Geography lesson involved a fun fieldwork investigation. We set out to discover which street was the quietest: Green Lane or School Lane. The children thoroughly enjoyed gathering information and observing within the local environment as part of this task.

Just to make you aware, Forest Schools will take place on Thursdays. A letter will be sent home shortly with further information about what the children will need and what to expect from these sessions.

We would also like to remind parents that children in Year 1 can have a snack during morning playtime and in the afternoon if they would like one. Fruit is available in school for all children. Alternatively, children may bring a healthy snack from home, such as fruit or yoghurt. Please ensure that any snacks brought into school do not contain nuts or sesame, as we are a nut-free school.

We are also looking forward to welcoming parents to our Meet the Teacher session on Tuesday 8th September at 5:30pm. This will be a great opportunity to find out more about Year 1, our curriculum, routines and expectations for the year ahead.

Well done, Year 1, for such an incredible first week. We are so proud of everything you have achieved already and are really looking forward to watching you progress and grow throughout the year ahead.

Have a lovely weekend - Mrs Berry
