What a brilliant first week back we have had! The children have settled into Year 6 exceptionally well and have made a fantastic start to their final year at Wood Fold. It has certainly been a busy week, with lots of new learning already taking place.

In Maths, we have started our first unit on place value. The children have been working with numbers up to 10,000,000, developing their understanding of the value of each digit and practising how to read and write these larger numbers accurately.

We have also begun reading our first novel of the year, Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. We have started to learn more about Michael and his family and the events that lead to a huge change in their lives. Michael has been trusted with an exciting secret as Mum and Dad begin planning an incredible voyage around the world. We are looking forward to finding out where their adventure takes them!

This week has also been our Geography Fieldwork Week. The children were given the challenge of deciding the best location in the school grounds for a new reading bench. They planned and designed their own investigation before making an anemometer and programming a micro to help gather data about wind speed in different locations. Once they had collected their results, the children analysed and evaluated their findings before using the evidence to decide where they thought the reading bench would be best placed.

In Science, we have begun our new topic on Living Things and their Habitats . We started by learning about Carl Linnaeus and his important contribution to the way living things are classified. This will provide the foundations for our learning as we explore how and why scientists organise living things into different groups.

As well as beginning our curriculum work, we have spent time discussing our behaviour, routines and expectations for the year ahead. We have talked particularly about what it means to be a Year 6 pupil and the responsibility that comes with being the oldest children in the school. The children have thought carefully about how they can set a positive example and be excellent role models for our younger pupils.

The children have made a fantastic impression during their first week. They have approached their learning with enthusiasm, worked hard and responded brilliantly to the expectations of Year 6. We couldn't have asked for a better start to the new school year and are really looking forward to everything the year ahead has to offer!
