This week has been full of exciting learning across all our subjects, and Year 6 have shown great focus and enthusiasm throughout.
English
In English, we read further into Holes and met the strict and rather intimidating Warden. Her introduction helped us think carefully about atmosphere in writing. We explored what atmosphere is, how an author creates it, and why it matters to the reader. We looked closely at the language choices in the text and identified evidence that helped build a tense and uneasy mood around the Warden’s character. The class made thoughtful observations about how suspense and tension are created through description and character behaviour.
Maths
In Maths, we moved deeper into algebra by learning how to form expressions and equations. The class practised solving equations using bar models, which helped to visualise the relationships between numbers and unknowns. Pupils showed strong reasoning skills as they worked through increasingly challenging problems.
Design Technology
Our DT lessons focused on understanding why recipes are used and why they are sometimes amended. We discussed the importance of accuracy in cooking and explored how recipes need to be adapted depending on how many people they are intended to serve. The children learned how to scale ingredients up and down and showed confidence when adjusting quantities for different group sizes.
Geography
In Geography, the class researched agricultural land use in three contrasting places: Snowdonia, Ghana and the Amazon Basin. We considered the advantages and disadvantages of farming in each location and explored how climate, landscape and available resources influence the ways land is used. The children showed great curiosity and asked thoughtful questions about how geography shapes people’s lives and livelihoods.
Science
In Science, we revisited the concept of reflection. The class recapped what reflection means and then explored the idea that the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection are equal. Using mirrors and coloured lines drawn on paper, pupils observed how light travels and bounces, and used this to track the direction of reflected rays. The investigation encouraged careful observation and precise recording.
It has been a fantastic week of learning, and Year 6 should feel proud of all their hard work. Let me know if you'd like the blog to sound more formal, more playful, shorter, or written in the voice of the class.
A huge well done to Y6G for winning class points this week! Keep it up!
