Hello Year 1 Families!
We have had a wonderful week of discovery, from the icy poles of the Earth to the sunny adventures of a wandering meerkat.
This week, we became scientists to investigate the effects of temperature on water. We filled two gloves with water and placed one in the freezer and one in the cupboard. We then made predictions as to what we think will happen and also how we can make it a fair test.
We have been travelling to the very top and bottom of our world! We learned that:
The North Pole is located in the Arctic (which is mostly frozen ocean). The South Pole is part of Antarctica (a huge, icy continent). We’ve been comparing these snowy places and even learning which animals live where.
We are still following Sunny the Meerkat on his journey in Meerkat Mail. We’ve been discussing Sunny’s Feelings how he feels in each new place. The children have been giving him great advice, like "go back home to your family" or "remember to write home!".
Our budding chefs have been busy designing their very own fruit salads. We talked about our favourite fruits, how they look and smell, and how to stay safe and hygienic in the kitchen.
In Maths, we have officially started addition and subtraction within 20. A fantastic skill to practice at home is learning number bonds to 20 (for example, 15 + 5 = 20 or 12 + 8 = 20).
What a busy week! We can't wait to see what next week brings.
