What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 2! The children have worked incredibly hard across all subjects. Here’s a little update on what we’ve been up to.

This week in English, we explored two poems linked to our topic: The Great Fire of London and A Tiny Burning Flame. The children compared the two poems by:

  • Looking at their different rhyming patterns
  • Noticing how many verses each poem had
  • Learning the meaning of new vocabulary from the texts

The children also completed an activity to help deepen their understanding of these new words.

In Maths, we focused on developing our understanding of volume and capacity. We learnt the difference between the terms volume and capacity. We then moved on to learning how to measure using litres and millilitres Next week, we’ll build on this knowledge and begin solving problems involving capacity using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Our Science lessons have been all about food chains. We learnt what the key words mean:

  • Producer
  • Consumer
  • Predator
  • Prey

The children then created their own food chains, remembering that the arrows represent “eaten by”. We also completed our end-of-topic enquiry question, comparing the Arctic and the desert. The children drew on everything they’ve learned this term to explain the similarities and differences between these two environments.

In Art, we continued exploring our topic on collage. The children investigated the materials they’ll be using to create their final pieces and discussed the pros and cons of both ripping and cutting techniques. Everyone is very excited to begin creating their own collages inspired by The Great Fire of London next week!

In Computing, we have continued to create our own pictograms based on a set of data that we have collected, this linked to mini-beasts. We then discussed our findings using the terms ‘more than’ and ‘less than’.

In Music, we continued working on our Gamelan piece. We played the balungan, which is the main melody repeated several times, on the glockenspiel. We then explored the Peking, which also plays the balungan but at a quicker pace, meaning each note is played twice—so a single C becomes C C . After practising it, we performed to our friends.

We are so proud of all the effort Year 2 has put into their learning this week.

Have a lovely weekend!
