What a fantastic week we have had in Year 1! The children have been working incredibly hard, asking some brilliant questions and enjoying lots of exciting learning experiences.
In Science, we have continued our learning about the seasons. This week, we focused on Autumn and discussed some of the signs we might notice over the next few weeks. We thought about changes to the trees, leaves, weather and the amount of daylight. Keep your eyes peeled when you are out and about to see how many signs of Autumn you can spot!
In Geography, we have been exploring our local area. We learnt about some of the different amenities in Standish and discussed why they are useful to the people who live there. The children enjoyed sharing their knowledge of places they recognise and use in their local community.
This week, we became art critics! We looked carefully at a piece of artwork by Kandinsky and shared our thoughts and opinions. We discussed how the artwork made us feel, what we noticed and whether we liked it. It was wonderful to hear the children explaining their ideas and understanding that everyone can have a different opinion about art.
In Maths, we have been using the mathematical vocabulary greater than, less than and equal to. We compared two numbers and decided which was greater and which was smaller. We also practised using the >, < and = signs correctly. We will continue to work on this over the next few weeks.
Our English learning has been based around our book Clean Up! We have used our imaginations to invent different ways of quickly collecting rubbish from the beach. We also thought creatively about different methods we could use to help us see the whales out at sea. There were some fantastic and imaginative ideas!
We had an amazing time at Forest School yesterday! We enjoyed playing hide and seek, exploring the forest and searching for signs of Autumn. It was a great opportunity to bring our Science learning to life and see some of the seasonal changes happening around us.
Yesterday, we also celebrated Languages Day! First we discussed the different languages children knew and they shared phrases from different languages. Our class then learnt some simple phrases in German and enjoyed a story all about a little boy called Lukas. We enjoyed saying "Hallo! Ich heisse ..." (which means "Hello! I am called...).
Just a polite reminder that PE will now take place on Wednesday afternoons and Friday mornings. Please ensure that children have everything they need for their PE sessions.
Well done, Year 1, for another fantastic week of learning.
Have a lovely weekend!
