Welcome back!

In Maths this week, we have started our new topic on Fractions. The children have been learning all about equal and unequal parts and have been very good at spotting when the parts are equal or not. We have also been learning to recognise and find one half. We used lots of practical resources, including shapes and counters, to help us understand that a half means two equal parts.

In Geography, we located the seven continents of the world. We especially focused on the continent of Africa. We learned the difference between a continent and a country. A continent is a large land mass that has many countries inside it. We were shocked to find out that Africa has 54 countries! We then used atlases to help us locate South Africa and the city of Cape Town. We also discovered that South Africa is surrounded by two oceans on three sides. These are the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

In Music, we have been listening to different pieces of music with a South African feel. The children really enjoyed exploring new sounds and rhythms. We listened to “The Click Song” by Miriam Makeba, “In the Jungle” by The Tokens, “Hlokoloza (Party Mix)” by Arthur, and “Homeless” by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The children listened very carefully and talked about how the music made them feel. We practised listening closely to identify the instruments we could hear and decided whether the melody was high‑pitched or low‑pitched. The children were also encouraged to move to the pulse, which is the heart beat of the music. Everyone did a fantastic job clapping, tapping and moving in time with the music

We have started our exciting new Science topic all about plants. To begin, we revisited our Year 1 learning and talked about what we already know about trees and plants. The children recalled the definitions of wild plants and garden plants and were able to give great examples of each. We also recalled the difference between deciduous trees, which lose their leaves, and evergreen trees, which keep their leaves all year round. We then enjoyed sorting different plants and trees using a given criteria. This helped us practise our thinking skills and explain our choices clearly.

In Art this week, we have found out about the famous artist Pablo Picasso and his life. We found out that he was born in Spain and loved drawing from a very young age. Picasso grew up to become one of the most famous Cubist artists in the world. We looked closely at some of Picasso’s artwork. His pictures looked very different to other paintings we had seen before. Some of his faces were funny shapes, and eyes and noses were in unusual places. We also learned about the techniques that Picasso used. He liked to break shapes apart and put them back together in a new way.

This week in English, we have started our exciting new text, The Boy Who Grew Dragons. We have really enjoyed reading the story so far! During our lessons, we have answered questions linked to the text and thought carefully about the characters’ thoughts and feelings. We have shared our ideas through discussion and used evidence from the story to support our answers. We are all looking forward to reading on and finding out what happens next.

In Computing this week, we have started our new digital music topic. We listened to and compared two pieces of music from The Planets by Gustav Holst. We discussed the similarities and differences between the pieces and thought about how the music created different moods. Using a musical description word bank, we described how the music made us feel as listeners.

Homework this week is a learning postcard linked to our Great Fire of London topic. Please don’t stick these in your homework books as these will be stuck in out Humanities books.

Have a lovely weekend!
