Big Walk and Wheel

What a tremendous week it’s been regarding our ‘Big Walk and Wheel’ event. Over the course of the week there has been a total of 1,153 active journeys across school that have been recorded! We are currently in 86th place out of the 1,170 schools that have entered the competition across the nation, as we currently sit in 7th place out of the 96 schools that have entered the event in the north west of England. Currently, Y4K are leading the way across school with an impressive 112 active journeys! With only 1 more week to go, can we climb higher up the rankings both locally and nationally! If you haven’t already done so, can you walk, scoot or cycle to school over the next week! Well done to all the children who have been completing their active travel to school!

Made for the Game

Made for This Game’ is a 2026 campaign launched by England Football to promote women's and girls' football, aiming to increase participation, inclusion, and representation on and off the pitch. It emphasizes that everyone belongs in football. Over the last week, we have done just that! All pupils from Wood Fold took part in a 1-hour football session, which was delivered by Mr Speakman and Mr Carr. The children were introduced to the event through class assemblies, which focussed on the importance of raising the profile of the game for girls. The children then took part in lots of skill-based activities, such as dribbling around cones, passing through gates to a partner and shooting at the cones to try and knock as many of them as possible down. Towards the end of the lesson, the children took part in small sided competitive games, with the aim of the game to have as much fun as possible whilst applying skills learnt into the matches. At the end of the lessons, the girls from each class were signposted to local girl’s football teams, with contact details of how they can get in touch.

At breaktime, lunchtime and after-school, girls across the school had the opportunity to further develop their skills through sessions being run by specialist coaches focussing on attacking and defensive principles. The girls also got the opportunity to compete in matches, allowing the girls the freedom to referee their own games, promoting sportsmanship and respect.

Whilst this was going on in school, girls from years 3 and 4 were invited down to Laithwaite Park in Wigan to experience competing (for the very first time) against other schools in the local area in friendly matches. The girls were taught new skills from local high school students, as well as coaches from Wigan Athletic, once again focussing on passing, shooting and dribbling. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day and couldn’t wait to tell their friends and family back in school about winning their matches.

Our Year 5 and 6 girls also took part in a girl’s football festival (despite it being on another day). The girls also competed in skills activities and friendly football matches against other schools. Despite the wet and rainy conditions, this did not stop the girls from having lots of fun and taking away lots of new skills with them. A big thank you goes to our SGOs for organising and running another fantastic inclusive event for our girls. Their confidence in sport in general defiantly increased from participating in this event.
