๐ŸŒŸ Year 1 Weekly Blog ๐ŸŒŸ

It has been another exciting and busy week in Year 1, with lots of wonderful learning taking place across the curriculum!

๐Ÿ“š English

We have started a brand-new text, Percy’s Bumpy Ride by Nick Butterworth, and the children have loved exploring this fun story already!

This week, we focused on understanding characters’ thoughts by looking carefully at the illustrations and using clues from the text. The children did a fantastic job imagining what Percy was thinking as he zoomed out of the workshop on his new invention, and what the animals might have been thinking as they watched him!

We even discovered that Percy’s lawnmower could fly, which sparked lots of excitement and imaginative ideas! The children wrote some brilliant sentences showing their understanding of the story and characters.

๐Ÿ”ข Maths

In Maths, we have started our new unit on fractions.

We have been learning that:

  • A whole is all of something
  • A half is one of two equal parts
  • Equal parts are pieces that are the same size

The children practised recognising half, finding half of shapes, and finding half of quantities. They worked really hard and are starting to understand these important new concepts.

โœˆ๏ธ History

In History, we learnt about the inspiring Bessie Coleman, the first African American woman to earn an international pilot’s licence.

The children were fascinated to learn that she travelled all the way to France to achieve her dream. We talked about her determination and why she is such an important and significant figure in history.

๐ŸŽค Father’s Day Assembly

Rehearsals for our Father’s Day assembly are well underway and the children are very excited to perform!

Please continue to practise lines at home. If you need another copy of your child’s lines, just let us know ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿงช Science

In Science, we have been learning about the properties of materials.

The children explored different objects and used fantastic vocabulary to describe them, such as:

  • stretchy
  • soft
  • bendy

We were very impressed with the brilliant describing words they came up with!

๐Ÿ’ป Computing

In Computing, we have been developing our skills using text. The children learnt how to:

  • change the font
  • select a word by double-tapping
  • make careful choices when editing text

They showed great control and independence using the technology.

โœ‚๏ธ DT

In Design and Technology, the children created their final pieces – a moving picture using a lever mechanism.

They designed beautiful city backgrounds and made their own little aeroplanes fly across the page. The finished pieces were fantastic, and the children were very proud of their work! Take a look at the photos below:

Thank you for your continued support.

We have realised that we have a few reading and sharing books missing - if you have any at home that belong to school, please could you return them so that we can re-distribute them?

Have a lovely weekend! ๐ŸŒˆ
