It has been another busy and productive week in Year 6, with the children showing excellent focus, curiosity, and engagement across all areas of learning.
In Maths, we continued our work on fractions. The children practised adding and subtracting any two fractions, including mixed numbers, and also explored multiplying fractions by integers. They have shown great resilience in applying their knowledge to increasingly challenging problems.
In English, we continued reading Pig Heart Boy and explored the different characters’ feelings about the heart transplant. The children considered the pros and cons of xenotransplantation and then planned and wrote a persuasive text from Cameron’s perspective, convincing his mother to allow the pig heart transplant. The writing was highly emotive and showed excellent understanding of both character and purpose.
In History, we launched our new Crime and Punishment unit. We recapped how the Anglo-Saxons lived, looking at settlements and their social hierarchy. Next, we will explore typical crimes and punishments during Anglo-Saxon times.
In Science, we studied the circulatory system in more detail, focusing on the heart and how it works. The children learned about the key parts, including ventricles and atria, and how blood moves through the body.
As it was Anti-Bullying Week, we dedicated our PSHE session to exploring this important topic. The children reflected on how to recognise bullying, how to respond, and the importance
of kindness and respect.
In Computing, we started a new unit by analysing what makes a good website. The children unpicked different examples and discussed design, purpose and functionality.
In Art, we compared the work of two photorealist artists, Ileana Hunter and Charles Bierk. The children explored differences in style, medium and technique, developing their critical appreciation and understanding of photorealism.
On Tuesday, Year 6 represented our school at St Wilfrid’s Church for Remembrance Day. The children took part in a service and respectfully paid their tributes, showing great maturity and reflection.
It has been another fantastic week, and we are incredibly proud of the children’s effort, attitude and engagement in all areas of learning.
Well done, Year 6!
