We have had another brilliant week in Year 2!

This week in English, we continued reading our non-fiction book all about The Great Fire of London. The children worked hard using different strategies to help them answer finish-the-sentence style questions, thinking carefully about the information they had read. We also explored key vocabulary from the text and completed an activity to help deepen our understanding of these important words. Next week we are looking forward to writing our own non-fiction texts.

In Maths, we continued with our length and height topic. The children looked closely at objects around the classroom deciding whether they were longer or shorter than one metre. We have also been practising comparing lengths and heights using key vocabulary such as shorter, longer, and taller.

Our History learning this week focused on how London changed after The Great Fire. We discovered that:

  • Buildings could no longer be built too close to the river
  • Streets had to be wider
  • Houses needed to be made from brick and stone instead of wood

The children then completed an artefact activity where they studied real plans showing how London would be rebuilt.

In Computing, we enjoyed creating our very own pictograms. Working from a set of data, the children entered information into a program which then generated clear and colourful pictograms. They then used these to answer questions about the data. This was a fantastic opportunity to link computing with maths and develop early data-handling skills.

In Music, we continued developing our glockenspiel skills, playing with confidence while thinking carefully about dynamics (how loud or soft the music is) and tempo (the speed).

We have loved celebrating British Science Week, with this year’s theme centred around curiosity. We explored a range of scientific job roles and asked thoughtful questions linked to each one. Our main challenge was: “What does great teamwork look like?” The children worked in groups of four to create a collaborative drawing using only one pen held together with pegs! This activity encouraged communication, teamwork and problem-solving, and the children did an amazing job of working together to plan and complete their pictures.

Have a lovely weekend!
