What a lovely week we've had in Year 1!
We’ve had such a busy and exciting few days in class. This week, we started our brand‑new book The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. The children were instantly hooked by Peter’s cheeky behaviour and his daring trip into Mr McGregor’s garden!
In Maths, we kicked off our work on comparing lengths and heights. The children used plenty of practical equipment to explore words like taller, shorter and longer. Lots of hands‑on fun!
In Geography, we travelled around the United Kingdom, learning about the four countries and their capital cities—London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The children loved spotting famous landmarks and getting to know how the UK is made up.
In Art, we learned how artists use simple shapes to start their drawings. The children practised breaking down a rabbit’s ear into circles and triangles before adding detail to create a more realistic sketch.
In Science, we explored the different parts of a plant, roots, stems, leaves and flowers and talked about why each part is important for helping a plant grow strong and healthy.
In PSHE, we’ve been thinking about money and discussing the difference between our wants and our needs. The children had some really thoughtful ideas!
The highlight of the week was definitely our Mother’s Day assembly. The children sang so confidently, and it was wonderful to see how proud they were.
Homework this week is Sounds Write activities based on the /s/ sound.
📢 A little reminder: Next week we start our Big Wheel and Walk
