What a wonderful and busy week we’ve had in Reception! The children have been full of curiosity, enthusiasm, and creativity.

This week we explored the story The Great Race, which links beautifully to Chinese New Year. The children enjoyed diving into the adventure of the animals competing to win the race. Through Drawing Club, we created imaginative scenes, talked about characters, and used rich vocabulary to bring the story to life. The children’s ideas were brilliant, thoughtful, and sometimes very funny!

In maths, we’ve been working on doubles to 8 – using practical resources, songs, and games to help the children recognise doubles confidently and we looked at combining two groups to make 8. The children were introduced to length and enjoyed comparing objects, using vocabulary longer and shorter, and beginning to measure using non-standard units.

To celebrate Chinese New Year, the children composed their own simple melodies using glockenspiels. They experimented with different sounds, patterns, and rhythms, and the results were both creative and joyful. It was lovely to see their confidence grow as they explored making music.

Our craft sessions were bursting with colour this week! The children created beautiful Chinese New Year artwork, using a range of materials and techniques. Dragons, lanterns, and lucky red designs helped us learn more about the celebration.

In PE, we have been practising underarm throwing, focusing on control, accuracy, and using the correct technique. The children showed great determination and enjoyed working both independently and with partners.

We are so proud of the children for their focus, creativity, and enthusiasm. They have embraced every activity with smiles and energy. We want to wish all our Reception children and their families a fun, restful, and safe half-term break. We hope you enjoy spending time together, making memories, and recharging ready for more learning adventures next half term.

We look forward to seeing everyone back, refreshed and ready for exciting new challenges!
