This week in Year 2, we have had another exciting and busy time filled with lots of wonderful learning across our subjects.
This week in Maths, we finished our learning about Time. We focused on understanding how many hours there are in a day. We talked about what we do at different times and discussed how day and night make up 24 hours altogether. After completing our Time unit, we started an exciting new topic: Statistics. We explored how to collect information using tally charts. We practised counting and recording data carefully using tally marks. We also looked at tables and learnt how to interpret the information they show. We answered questions about the data and talked about what it tells us.
This week in English, we began reading our exciting new book Pugs of the Frozen North. We read the first few chapters and shared our first thoughts about the main characters, Shen and Sika. The children enjoyed discussing what they are like and making their own predictions about what might happen next.
In Science, we finished our plants topic by answering our enquiry question: “What do seeds need in order to grow best?” The children reflected on everything they have learnt and discussed the importance of water, light and warmth for healthy plant growth.
In Spelling, we have been learning about plurals. We practised the rule of changing a ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and adding ‘es’ (for example, baby → babies). The children worked hard to apply this rule in their spelling tasks.
In Geography, we looked at the results from the rain gauge we have had outside on the grass outside the Year 2 classroom. We analysed the data to find out which days were the wettest and which were the driest. The children enjoyed comparing the results and talking about the weather patterns.
In DT, we discovered that our new design project is to create a moon buggy! We learnt about different parts such as wheels, axles and washers. We also thought about which objects use wheels and whether toys are pushed or pulled. The children are very excited to begin designing their own buggies!
Well done Year 2 for another fantastic week of learning!
