๐ Year 1 Weekly Blog ๐
What a fantastic and memorable week we have had in Year 1!
๐งญ Geography
In Geography, we have been learning about compasses and compass points. The children enjoyed exploring directions such as north, south, east and west.
We used our new knowledge to talk about where Blackpool is located and described its position using compass points. The children did a brilliant job and they are beginning to understand how we can describe places more precisely.
๐ English
We have continued reading Katie Morag Delivers the Mail and have been thinking carefully about the characters.
This week, we focused on forming impressions of Grannie Island using evidence from the text to support our ideas. The children shared thoughtful responses and were able to explain their opinions confidently.
We also imagined how each character might feel when they received the wrong mail! The children explained their ideas clearly and used reasons to support their answers, thinking about emotions such as confusion, surprise and frustration.
๐ข Maths
In Maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of turns.
We now know the difference between:
- a quarter turn
- a half turn
- a full turn
The children practised recognising and making these turns and showed great understanding when describing movement and direction.
๐งช Science
In Science, we went on a nature walk around the school grounds to look for signs of summer.
The children spotted lots of exciting changes, including:
- fruit growing
- growing plants and flowers
- more insects
We had some great discussions about how the environment changes as the seasons change.
๐จ Art
In Art, we explored weaving paper, inspired by the artist Jo Atherton.
The children found this quite tricky, but showed excellent perseverance and determination. They should be very proud of the effort they put into mastering a new skill!
โ๏ธ School Trip – Manchester Airport
On Thursday, we visited Manchester Airport’s Runway Visitor Park, and what an amazing day it was - even with the rain!
The children had an unforgettable experience:
- exploring the incredible Concorde and learning about its history
- going on board two real aeroplanes, which was very exciting!
- discovering the different jobs at an airport, including pilots, cabin crew and ground staff
- watching planes take off and land
The children were brilliantly behaved and showed so much enthusiasm throughout the day. It was lovely to see their curiosity and excitement as they asked questions and shared their ideas. A fantastic learning experience for everyone!
Thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a lovely weekend! ๐ Mrs Grimes
