Platinum School Games Mark

We are delighted to announce that we, Wood Fold Primary School, have achieved the School Games Platinum Mark Award for the 2025/26 academic year. The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success. Our sporting achievements this year include:

  • Winners of the Wigan & Leigh Graham Jackett Cross-Country Event
  • Winners of the Wigan Cricket Competition
  • Winners of the Wigan Boccia Competition
  • Runners up in the Greater Manchester Boccia Competition
  • Runners up for team of the year (boccia) at the Wigan Believe Sports Awards

With a total of 70% young people competing in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible. As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year. A special thanks goes to all of the children across school for their hard work, commitment and sporting prowess! Without them, none of this would be possible. We look forward to applying once again in 2027!

Year 3&4 Football Competition

On Monday this week, children from Years 3 and 4 competed in a football competition against 35 other schools from the Wigan area. The team were put into a group of 5, were each team played each other twice. The boys played superbly well throughout the group stage, winning all of their matches, not conceding a single goal. Overall, the team scored an impressive 14 goals overall in the group stage, finishing top of the group and earning themselves a place in the last 16.

The team were up against Winstanley in the last 16. Here, the team took things up a notch, showcasing immense passing, movement and shooting at goal, winning the game 3-0. In the quarter finals, the boys dominated the game throughout, hitting the post and creating lots of chances. Unfortunately, the team didn’t manage to score, resulting in a penalty shootout. Once again, the penalty gods were not on our side and the boys bowed out of the competition.

Overall, the boys should keep their heads held high as they displayed fantastic team spirit and football throughout the tournament. They can’t wait to be back next year better and stronger for the Year 5 football competition during the Spring term.
