What a fantastic first full week we have had in Year 1! The children have settled well into their new classroom routines and have shown a wonderful enthusiasm for learning. We are incredibly proud of how hard everyone has worked.

This week in English, we have been reading the delightful story Oi Frog! The children enjoyed exploring the characters and using their imaginations to think carefully about what they might look like. We discussed what the frog could sit on and shared lots of creative ideas about what the wizard might turn the frog into. The children demonstrated excellent speaking and listening skills as they shared and explained their ideas. Professor Klunk was very impressed with our codes, and we will continue to work on using capital letters, fingers spaces and full stops.

In Maths, we have continued our learning about place value. We have been finding one more than a given number and practising our number knowledge. We have also been learning to recognise numbers when they are written as words.

Our new Science topic is Seasons. We began by learning the names of all four seasons and discussing what happens during each one. The children looked carefully at different images and used clues in the pictures to identify which season was being shown.

In Geography, we started our exciting new topic about our local area, Standish. We began by learning the difference between human features and physical features. The children looked at a range of images and successfully identified whether each feature was human or physical. We then discussed their reasoning and explained why each feature belonged to its category.

This week in Art, we have been learning about the artist Wassily Kandinsky. We discovered that he was born in Russia and was a painter. The children explored examples of his artwork and talked about the shapes, colours and lines he used. We noticed that his paintings did not look like real-life objects.

In PSHE, we have been discussing where we feel safe. The children had some brilliant ideas and were very confident when talking about the different places where they feel safe and comfortable. It was lovely to hear them sharing their thoughts and listening respectfully to one another.

Next week, we will be starting Forest Schools. A letter containing more information will be sent home early next week, so please keep an eye out for this.

Finally, we would like to say a huge thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support. The children have made a wonderful start to Year 1, and we are so proud of everything they have achieved already. They have worked incredibly hard and are looking forward to another exciting week of learning together!

Have a wonderful weekend!
