It has been another fantastic week in Year 6, with plenty of determination, creativity and enthusiasm shown across all areas of learning.
In Maths, we continued our work on the four operations, focusing on division by two-digit numbers. The children have tackled a range of problems in different contexts, including multi-step challenges that required them to decide which operations to use and explain their reasoning. Their perseverance with these complex methods has been excellent to see.
In English, our grammar focus this week has been on using semi-colons and subordinate clauses to create more sophisticated sentences. We planned and began writing a log of Michael’s journey so far from Kensuke’s Kingdom, starting with a detailed paragraph about the dramatic moment he fell overboard. The children worked hard to capture emotion and tension in their writing and will continue this piece next week.
In Design and Technology, we explored axles and wheels, learning how these components work together to create movement. The children made their own axles and wheels for their moving vehicles and began constructing the nets for their cabins and cargo beds. Their teamwork and problem-solving skills were impressive throughout.
In Science, we continued our work on classification keys, looking more closely at how animals can be grouped based on their characteristics. The children enjoyed sorting examples and beginning to design their own branching keys.
In PSHE, our focus was individual liberty. We discussed what this means and how it allows us to make our own choices, express our opinions and take responsibility for our actions in everyday life. The children shared thoughtful examples of how they exercise these freedoms respectfully.
In Geography, we continued exploring the Jurassic Coast, looking in depth at some of its most famous landmarks. We learned how Durdle Door was formed through coastal erosion, creating a striking natural limestone arch; explored Old Harry Rocks, dramatic chalk stacks shaped by the sea; and examined Lulworth Cove, a perfect example of how waves and rock types create unique coastal formations. The children were fascinated by how these features tell the story of millions of years of geological change.
We also celebrated World Mental Health Day this week by wearing yellow to raise awareness and show support for positive mental health. We were joined by staff from Wigan Warriors, who delivered an engaging assembly about looking after our mental wellbeing, talking about our feelings, and supporting one another. The children showed great maturity and understanding during the discussions, and it was wonderful to see such enthusiasm for this important message.
It has been another busy and productive week of learning – well done, Year 6! Enjoy your weekend and be proud of all you’ve achieved.
