Welcome Back to Year 1!

Happy New Year to all our families! It has been wonderful to see the children return with such enthusiasm and big smiles, ready for a busy Spring Term in 2026.

This week, we have been diving deep into place value with numbers 10, 11, 12, and 13. We have been using "tens frames" and Base 10 to explore how these numbers are made. The children are becoming experts at identifying that these numbers are made of one ten and some ones.

We have started our new class book, "Meerkat Mail" by Emily Gravett. The children have loved making predictions about where Sunny the meerkat might travel next. We have also been exploring Sunny’s feelings as he decides to leave his large family at Kalahari Desert in search of somewhere new.

In Design and Technology, we have launched our food technology unit! Our mission is to design a healthy fruit salad that would be appealing for a Year 1 child to eat. We’ve been discussing different colours, textures, and tastes to make our designs look as tasty as possible.

In Geography, we have been "globetrotting" as we learn the 7 continents. Ask your child if they can name them all. We have been practicing a very catchy song to help us remember them!

Our Computing lessons have taken an exciting turn as we started using Bee-Bots. The children are learning the basics of programming by giving the robots clear instructions (algorithms) to move forward, backward, and turn.

This week, we are sending home a Learning Postcard. We ask that you sit down and complete this together with your child. It is a lovely way for them to share what they have enjoyed learning this week and for you to record a comment about their progress.

Please ensure these are returned to school by Wednesday.

Thank you for your continued support!
