This week in Year 2, we have been learning lots of new and interesting things.

In English, we have continued reading through the chapters of our book. Last week, we were introduced to all the entrants in the race, and this week we have explored these characters in more detail. We have been discussing why Sir Basil is not a very kind person. We have also considered whether the characters made the right decision in leaving one of them behind in the noodle bar.

In Spelling, we have been learning about when the letter c can make different sounds:

• a hard sound /k/
• a soft sound /s/

We also learned that when the letter c comes before e, it often makes the /s/ sound. For example, race and face.

In Maths, we are continuing our topic on Position and Direction. We have been describing movement and turns, as well as exploring shape patterns involving turns.

In Science, we have been learning about how the properties of different materials that make them suitable for specific purposes. We explored the words transparent, waterproof and opaque.

In History, we have been learning about our third explorer, Matthew Henson. We explored his life and discussed why he is a significant person. Next week, we will be thinking about the legacies that Neil Armstrong, Mae Jemison, and Matthew Henson left behind.

In DT, we created a success criteria for our moon buggies and drew a detailed design of the one we would like to make. We also considered the materials we might use.

In Music, we learnt how to play ‘Merrily we roll along’ on the recorders. The children did very well.

This week in Computing, we have continued to use Scatch Jr. We started by working out the actions of a sprite in an algorithm. The children were then able to explore which blocks they needed to use to meet the design. We are looking forward to continuing our Computing topic next week.
