What a fantastic and busy week it has been in Year 1! The children continue to amaze us with their wonderful ideas, enthusiasm and how much of their new learning they can remember. In assembly this week, the children have been looking carefully at our School Ethos. We are encouraging our children to become independent thinkers and have looked at what this means in school (i.e. having our own ideas, coming up with our own sentences and looking after our belongings.)

In English, we have loved reading Hairy Maclary, which was sent to us by Professor Klunk. The children came up with some brilliant words and phrases to describe Scarface Claw and thought of lots of clever ways to sneak past the toughest tomcat in town!

In Maths, we have completed our Place Value learning and moved on to Addition and Subtraction. This week, the children have explored part-whole models and learned how two parts can be combined to make a whole. They have also started writing their own number sentences using ‘plus’ and ‘is equal to’ up to 10.

In Phonics, we have continued practising the /ee/ sound. The children can continue consolidating this learning when enjoying their home reading books.

We became tree experts in Science this week! The children learned about evergreen trees, such as spruce and holly, and deciduous trees, such as oak and ash. Perhaps you could go on a tree hunt this weekend and see how many evergreen and deciduous trees you can spot!

In Computing, the children developed their keyboard skills by typing their names before using the Paintz app to create their own self-portraits.

In Forest School, we enjoyed another morning of beautiful weather. The children had a wonderful time exploring the forest and getting creative with natural materials, using sticks, conkers and leaves to make their own caterpillars.

In Art, we continued learning about Wassily Kandinsky and his famous abstract artwork. The children listened carefully to two different pieces of classical music and considered how the music made them feel. They then selected their own colours and patterns to create fantastic artwork inspired by Kandinsky.

In Geography, we continued exploring our local area, Standish. The children looked at maps and compasses and practised identifying North, South, East and West on a simple map. Over the next few weeks, they will put these skills into practice by plotting a route around Standish and spotting human and physical features as part of their fieldwork.

What an amazing amount of learning in just one week! We are incredibly proud of Year 1 and the enthusiasm, curiosity and hard work they show each day. Well done, everyone!

Reminder: the cauliflower Christmas card forms are due on Monday if you would like to purchase.

Have a lovely weekend!
