We have had another busy and exciting week of learning in Year 2!
In English, we have continued reading our class story The Boy Who Grew Dragons. The children explored the wonderful world of dragons by planning and writing their own shape poems to describe a dragon. They carefully included nouns, adjectives and adverbs to make their descriptions more interesting. We have also been thinking about the characters in the story, discussing their emotions and using evidence from the text to justify our answers. The children did a fantastic job explaining their ideas and referring back to what they had read.
In Maths, we have been learning how to recognise and find thirds and quarters. The children practised sharing shapes and quantities equally. We will now progress to finding three quarters of a shape and an amount.
In Geography, we compared the weather patterns in London and South Africa. The children interpreted information from bar charts to help them find out more about temperature. They enjoyed learning that the seasons fall at different times of the year and understood the reasons for this. The children worked hard developing their data‑reading skills.
Our spelling focus this week has been the rule adding –ed. We recapped what the past tense means and practised applying the rule to change words into the past tense. The children worked hard to use their new spellings in sentences.
In PSHE, we discussed family, identifying the different members of our own families and talking about why they are special to us. This led to some thoughtful conversations, and it was lovely to see the children sharing their experiences.
In Art, the children learned about Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter. They explored her artwork and discovered that she often painted self-portraits. We compared Frida Kahlo with Pablo Picasso and discussed similarities and differences between the two artists. The children noticed that both artists enjoyed creating self-portraits, while using very different styles to express themselves.
In Computing, we have been exploring rhythm. We created patterns and used those patterns as rhythms. We then used percussion instruments and computers to hear the different rhythm patterns that we had created. We are looking forward to continuing to make music using chrome music lab.
Well done to Year 2 for another fantastic week of learning. Have a lovely weekend!
