The children have enjoyed another busy and exciting week in Reception. In Drawing Club, we shared Tadpole’s Promise by Jeanne Willis. The children talked about the promise Tadpole makes, the changes that happen as he grows, and how Butterfly might be feeling. They used the story to inspire their drawings, carefully adding details to show the characters and key moments from the book.
In Maths, we have been confidently practising verbally counting beyond 20 and were introduced to the concept of addition, using practical examples and discussion to help children understand combining amounts.
Our science learning has continued with close observation of our class caterpillars, making simple notes and sharing ideas about how they are changing. We also introduced our new focus on worms, learning about where they live and why they are important. This linked beautifully with Forest School, where the children worked together to make a class wormery and carefully found worms to place inside it.
In Phonics, we have learned the digraphs sh and ch, practising reading and writing words with these sounds, while continuing to use and learn high‑frequency words.
To finish the week, the children created their own butterfly paintings inspired by American artist Lucy Arnold, focusing on colour, pattern and careful observation.
Well done, Reception, for a fantastic week of learning!
